It's unfortunate the $TMPDIR doesn't communicate any information about the availability of temporary directories of different types. I sometimes thing that having optional $PERSISTENT_TMPDIR (a pointer to a directory that persists for some time) and $ONDISK_TMPDIR (a directory that is on a slower medium than RAM) would be useful.
