Oracle tries to keep the old on-disk format readable and usable by the next libdb releases. From what I see from the changelogs: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/berkeleydb/downloads/index-082944.html The file format of 5.3.x should still be compatible with 4.8.x. Only the log file format upgrade is needed (if used).
