At least in the KDE case, we're trying really hard to support compat stuff. 
In fact, we still maintain kdelibs3, whereas most other distros have dropped 
it by now, even Debian. (And I can tell you that I have no intention 
whatsoever to drop it, even when we'll have the KDE Framework 5 coming. It 
is almost no effort to keep kdelibs3 working, just the odd FTBFS issue from 
time to time.) We also ship a kdebase3 containing things like the 
KonsolePart or the kprinter utility, something other distros aren't/weren't 
doing either.
