2.6.40 kernel update broke my ALSA apps

After update to 2.6.40:

$ arecord -L

…

default:CARD=CODEC
   USB Audio CODEC, USB Audio
   Default Audio Device

In prior kernels, this device was listed by alsa as "default:CARD=default".

This is the --device parameter to aplay, and friends. My scripts that run aplay broke spectacularly after the update.

Is this the kind of a kernel update we want to push out, in the middle of a release? Seems to me that this kind of backwards compatibility-breaking stuff belongs in the next release.
