They should be pretty solid for the older radeon cards. For the newest ones and 3D you have to use the ati binary driver right now.



The Open Source radeon drivers are at least supposed to work with Radeon 9200 and lower. It works great on my "built by ATI" Radeon 9200 on both x86 and x86-64, but your mileage may vary.
