2) Why don't the open source DRI drivers do OK with your card if it's not the latest and greatest (they support everything < Radeon 9200)?
IIRC the Radeon drivers that ship with FCx do not support TV-out.
I use Driver "vesa" for simple TV out. Maybe users of older radeons are not so bothered about acceleration and would like to use TV-out.
