Well, if people would ship the original format (e.g. TeX) files
we could build tools. However, I find that pdf, while readable
everywhere, is a write-only format (similarly ps, doc, and other
"end" formats). TeX has the advantage that it can be converted
to almost anything else, including html. And, if all else fails
you can read the TeX directly, thus being the equivalent of source
code. Shipping pdf is shipping binaries.

One man's opinion.
