Why put the users most likely to dislike us (low-computer-literacy newbies using old computers) through such a hassle?

I/M/HO the right solution is to get Intel and AMD's permission to use images of their case badges. Then we can present the architecture choice in a way that absolutely any user can answer:

     "Which of the following is stamped on the side of your computer?"
             *Series of pictures of case stickers follows*
