Hi,

intel driver 2.7.0 (and the DRM counter part) is broken for old intel
chipsets. On my i855GM, I can't even have Xv working correctly. X
crashes as soon as I start playing a video. Usually, I have to disable
mode setting by passing i915.modeset=0 as an argument to the kernel
before booting.

Updating manually (waiting for the official updates) to linux-2.6.30,
libdrm-2.4.11 and the latest intel-2.7.99.901
(http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel) solved all
my issues. The desktop even feels a bit snappier.
