I would just go for it. You can tread carefully for a short while to see if anyone else is active, before owning the project. But I found with the Games Spin, the more I felt I owned (was responsible for) the project the better I was able to accomplish stuff. (While still asking for feedback to make sure I didn't do something too crazy.)
