Specifically, file transfer support works more reliably, and you can manually choose any charset for messages. The latter is important if one wants to send messages to Trillian users, since Trillian doesn't support Unicode, and sends an error code if you try to send, e.g., any message containing CJK characters. With gaim, one can manually select Shift-JIS, or some other charset. That said, I would understand moving it to Extras. Like Alan, I note that an updated 1.3.0 release is supposedly forthcoming.
