That would save power, but it's not the only answer - framebuffer 
compression implementations tend to be per line, so as long as most of 
your information content is in the vertical axis rather than the 
horizontal one you'll get the same power savings.

That's not how LCDs work - black will, if anything, consume more power.

And Pulseaudio actually lets us reduce power consumption by increasing 
the fragment size and reducing the interrupt load.
