The priority setting is often (not always) ignored because it is getting set by users like you. The developers fix the bugs according to THEIR priorities (often based on how many users are affected and how badly), it is not your business to decide that your bug is more important than somebody else's. Posting "my bug is important" to a mailing list is just as impolite and arrogant as bumping its priority, and in addition it will also annoy people who don't care about your bug at all (if they did, they'd be CCed on it).
