With Apple, it's only possible to install add-on software through their walled garden or by breaking the OS entirely. Mozilla's new signature approach is far closer to the latter (and it doesn't need to be!). Honestly, I'd have far fewer issues with this if it was possible for the system administrator to add a new CA certificate that's trusted to sign extensions.
