I don't think it's terrible to sell being able to vote as a benefit of having an account. The quality of the votes will be significantly better when they come from engaged users, too. As an aside, when making calcuations based on the votes, please always weight as if there is one vote right in the middle. I don't think this is reasonable in the 21st century.
