It's present, so you don't need to rebuild the kernel.
Does it work if you modprobe r8169 ?

Why the kudzu/ network config tool never picked them up is a mystery. If
it doesn't work after a modprobe, it could be that you
have a newer revision with a different PCI ID. (lspci -x output
will be needed to fix that).
