My take, how ever naive it may be, is that up2date is a show stopper for RHEL.
Let's not mess with it.  Instead we can add much of the capability you suggest to
-packages.  Then, if proved rock solid these enhancements can be moved
to up2date if deemed important. 

This approach also reduces the work load on the package maintainers by
preventing additional branching in both the up2date and -packages tree.

I just opened an editor to study this from within -packages.  I kind of like
the presentation for browsing.  One might not realize what xmms is by the name, but
groups allow you to browse under sound and video to find it.  My question is if 3rd
party repos don't follow the prescribed grouping will so much be lumped under misc, or
some such thing, that the group presentation becomes useless.

I am including this ability in -package.  A screen shot should show up
here in a few hours. The screen shot is current in holding in
too-large-a-file land.

This is down the road a little while.  I intend to include some manner
of settings dialog to allow the user add and remove repos on the fly.
