i might make up a default template with clones and such, allowing for easy creation of these banners...
On the subject of the banner itself, i like the second one better (with the squares instead of the written date...)
IMO, it still portrays the Event / Date metaphor effectively. The only other ideas i had for an image for this banner were involving "party" items like a foamy beer or a martini, which could also protray an "Event". However i think the date / calendar image is a much better way to go....
