FDA Approves Skin Patch to Treat ADHD in Children

FDA has approved Daytrana, a once-daily skin patch for treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children aged 6 to 12 years. FDA calls the patch "an alternate route of administration" for the drug treatment. ADHD affects about three to seven percent of school-aged children in this country.

Device OK'd to Treat Rare Disorder of Identical Twin Fetuses
FDA has approved Fetoscopy Instrument Sets for treatment of fetuses with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), a rare disorder of the placenta that can occur when women are pregnant with identical twins. In TTTS, blood flow to the fetuses is uneven, which can cause heart failure in one twin and anemia in the other. The instrument sets can help normalize blood flow.

Contract Will Assess Processes for Postmarketing Commitment Studies
FDA has awarded a contract to evaluate the processes for collecting medical information in the period after FDA-regulated products are approved and marketed. These postmarketing studies play a vital role in furthering the medical community's knowledge about the safety, effectiveness, and best use of medical products.

Improperly Refrigerated Crabmeat Seized from N.J. Shipper
U.S. marshals have seized more than 30,000 pounds of crabmeat from a New Jersey shipping company after FDA determined that the crabmeat had not been adequately refrigerated. FDA initiated the seizure when the shipper, American President Lines Ltd., refused to destroy the crabmeat.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

What do I need to consider when buying contact lenses on the Internet, by phone or by mail?

FDA urges consumers to consider:

» Is my contact lens prescription current? You should always have a current, correct prescription when you order contact lenses.

» The expiration date for your prescription is currently set by your state. Some require a one-year renewal, some a two-year renewal, while other states leave it to your doctor to decide. Never order lenses with a prescription that has expired.

» If you have not had a check-up in the last one to two years, you may have problems with your eyes that you are not aware of, or your contact lenses may not correct your vision well.

For more on buying contact lenses online or by phone or mail, see http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/consumer/buycontactqa.html.     __________________________________________________________
