Colorectal Cancer Drug Approved on 'Fast Track'
After its fastest review yet for a cancer drug, FDA has approved the
colorectal cancer drug Eloxatin (oxaliplatin).  Used in combination with
other cancer drugs, the drug was shown to shrink tumors in some patients and
delay resumed tumor growth.

FDA Scientist Named First 'Americas Fellow'
Andreas Keller, Ph.D., an expert in microbiology, will serve as the United
States' first "Americas Fellow" under a new exchange program with
democracies throughout the Western Hemisphere.  The Americas Fellows
Exchange Program was initiated by President Bush and strongly supported by
HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson to promote excellence in government.  Keller
will work with the Mexican government on Good Agricultural and Manufacturing
Practices and imported produce safety initiatives.

Food Biotechnology Meeting to be Held Aug. 13-14
The Food Biotechnology Subcommittee of FDA's Food Advisory Committee will
discuss whether new proteins in bioengineered foods are likely to cause
allergic reactions in some individuals.  Feedback from this meeting will
help FDA prepare draft guidance for industry.

Food Labeling Workshop Slated for Aug. 14-15 in Dallas
FDA will hold a public workshop about regulations on food labeling and
allergen declaration, along with other related matters of importance to

Ear, Nose, and Throat Devices Panel to Meet Aug. 16
The Ear, Nose, and Throat Devices Panel of FDA's Medical Devices Advisory
Committee will meet in Gaithersburg, Md., to discuss and make
recommendations on a draft guidance on implantable middle ear hearing
devices.
