FAA Statement-Update on Chicago Air Traffic Facility

Air traffic in the Chicago area rebounded today after severe weather yesterday reduced the number of arrivals and departures at Chicago-area airports. By 1 p.m. CDT today, O’Hare arrivals and departures were running at more than 85 percent of the two-month average for a Friday, and Midway operations were just above 90 percent of the two-month Friday average. The FAA has continued to make telecommunications improvements between the Chicago TRACON and surrounding high-altitude air traffic centers to enable controllers to manage flights more efficiently.

FAA technical teams continue to make steady progress testing the undamaged equipment, installing new cabling, and setting up new telecommunications racks at the Chicago En Route Center in Aurora, IL. The team is developing an integrated testing and transition plan to ensure that all of the services transfer smoothly when they restart operations.
