Thanks, that does the trick! Note that I do not need to specify any console= kernel command line parameter for the fbdev console. With CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE=y CONFIG_DRM_CLIENT_DEFAULT_FBDEV=y I see all console messages on both the emulated fbdev console and on the serial console by default.
