I'm all for solving the real problem, but if that is not possible within a reasonable timeframe (which seems to be the case here) I assume Linus in cases like this would want the culprit to be reverted. Unless of cause that itself might cause a regression (which is possible, as the commit made it into 6.5), then things become tricky.
