That's an interesting find. I briefly looked through the code that validates the modes, but there's no obvious reason why it would now work.

opinion is not binding on either of you.)

Your proposal of giving userspace the opportunity to override kernel validation and program anything is not feasible in practice. It would open holes to the security and safety of the system.
