Re: SOLVED, gma500: monitor-dependent failure to boot FB console (psbdrmfb)

Good news:

Solved by upgrading the kernel from 4.19.48 to 4.19.136 (the latest in the 4.19 series).

Thanks for the hint that the work on gma500 has, in a sense, come to an end, reminding me that the latest kernel tarballs come with a long history of bug chasing efforts.

Another strange issue has been solved with the upgrade: previously the geeqie application worked OK, but displayed absolutely nothing. I actually mean the two contradictory statements: "geeqie --debug 4" traces were looking quite alike the traces from another system (other GPU, same O/S) in a simple session (alt-F4 after loading an image); absolutely no window was showing up from the geeqie application (with GMA500 / kernel 4.19.48), the X11 system nonetheless keeping trace of the current focus to this invisible window.

Thanks for making this good work available to us mortals!

Dear kernel / GPU enthusiasts!

This list is listed in the kernel MAINTAINERS file for GMA500 GPU kernel

Just to avoid disappointment later on: For the gma500 driver it's
essentially unmaintained, but we do take patches if they show up.

My message is either a call for help (not a mission-critical issue) or
troubleshooting information useful to fix an outstanding issue in the GMA500
kernel driver?

This GMA3650-GPU-based system with a self-supported Linux distribution boots
OK in all cases (ssh access fine when no console).

With the HAI monitor (actually a 7 inches monitor marketed for the cinema
industry, the edid information reporting a wrong display size), the frame
buffer console is fine, i.e. from the boot log:

[ 1.506269] fbcon: psbdrmfb (fb0) is primary device

Accordingly, there are two entries in the /sys/class/vtconsole/ directory,
names "(S) dummy device" and "(M) frame buffer device".

Unfortunately, with two ASUS monitors, the above line in the boot log never
appears. And the console turns blank early in the boot process. A single
entry appears in
/sys/class/vtconsole/, i.e. vtcon0/name -> "(S) VGA+".

In either case Xorg starts fine and switching between ctrl-alt-f7 and
ctrl-alt-f1..6 (either console for HAI or blank for ASUS) works fine.

Looking in the kernel source tree, 'psbdrmfb' is a frame buffer name
appearing once in the GMA500 GPU source code.

This what I found in my patient troubleshooting.

Uh this is strange, the gma500 driver should still load all fine and
register that framebuffer driver. I think the only case where gma500 loads
but psbdrmfb isn't set up is if it doesn't detect any outputs. I'd test
these monitors with some other linux system first (they might be simply
too broken), if that doesn't work you can quirk your system with the video
boot parameter perhaps:

Thanks in advance, and best regards!
