Arno- I thank you for the input, and may consider it if I can't make any
other headway.  Regarding systemd, the reason I ended up at Debian is
that I was trying to install Devuan.  I failed there, and they told me
that their installer had not been forked from Debian, so any issues
should be raised there.  So I tried the same things in Debian and had
the same problems.  But then, why not in Ubuntu?
