IIRC the OP was using Debian lenny, where the aes and some other crypt modules are explicitly loaded in the initrd by the cryptsetup hooks. FWIW I do this: # echo aes-x86_64 >>/etc/initramfs-tools/modules # update-initramfs -k all -u That loads the module in the initrd but before all others and regular aes will not be loaded then.
