dm-crypt possible memory leak?

I am seeing a problem when I try to format my usb hard drive, which mapped
using device mapper and dm-crypt. My system had 1GB RAM. The usb hard drive
size is 80 GB. I can map upto 40 GB and run mke2fs to format it. After running
mke2fs my system is very slow and if I try to run mke2fs again it locks up the
system due to lack of memory. If I map up to 80 GB, then mke2fs never succeeds.
I am kind of lost and willing to collect any data for you guys. I am using
linux 2.6.10. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Aravind
