Did you test this on v0.1 sensor and ensure that the trdy handshake works there as well? I don't have a platform to test this. But the safer option here will be to do the hand shake only for v0.

Does not the code in for loop for (j = LAST_TEMP_0; j <= UP_THRESH_15; j += 16) { do this for you ? If not, you should move it inside the if condition below. And in that case you need not loop enter the for (j = LAST_TEMP_0; j <= UP_THRESH_15; j += 16) {.
