Can you explain why this is done?

I'm not comfortable with this call. The underlying code is calling
mutex_lock, I suspect it can potentially deadlock the board.

Why do you need a mutex? Isn't a spin_lock enough?

Please take also the opportunity to rename to lock_bank / unlock_bank.
get and put are usually for refcounting.
