Note that the "w" in -wps seems redundant. The expanded text would read

The device can, per protocol, return up to I2C_SMBUS_BLOCK_MAX bytes. If it does,
the write into data[rc] will be beyond the end of the buffer, and the call
below will read data beyond the end of the buffer, You will need to increase
the buffer size by 2 for this to work. You can not rely on the assumption that
the device never returns that much data.

There is also still no explanation why the trailing '\0' is sent to userspace.
