yeah, thanks Thomas. i'm trying to follow the same pattern we've used
with other submodules like boost and rocksdb. the plan is to have
cmake variables WITH_SYSTEM_ARROW and WITH_SYSTEM_UTF8PROC that
control whether we link against the system packages or submodules, and
WITH_SYSTEM_UTF8PROC can default to ON for the debian builds

This makes me think: I've been looking for a WITH_SYSTEM_JERASURE and
WITH_SYSTEM_GFCOMPLETE but didn't find it. Will Ceph takes the system
libs if they are present? If not, is not a possible addition? I'd love
to have such fix for Pacific, for example.

Note that I've audited the changes between the Ceph submodule and the
system lib I'm maintaining, and it feels like the changes are minimal,
and the version in Debian is better than the submodule (more input
checkings...).

hey Thomas,

i agree that it's in everyone's best interest to use system packages
when they're available. feel free to raise tracker issues for stuff
that isn't supported yet. if you're willing to work on any of that,
i'd be happy to help review it

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I've filled this bug:
https://tracker.ceph.com/issues/54207

I'm not sure I'll have the skills and the time to learn this :/

Cheers,

Thomas Goirand (zigo)
