Is there any known bug or issue with 2.1.22 5.el5_4.3 / with RHEL 5 ?

There is no bug in cyrus-sasl itself.
The problem was in KerberosV / cyrus-sasl.

Linking cyrus-sasl 2.1.23 against the latest MIT Kerberos V release has
solved the problem on SL5, so don't waste your time asking yourself "Why
those simple programs don't want to work, what am I doing wrong ?!"

Sorry for the spam, but I hope it could help somebody someday :)

There was an issue with the RedHat version of KRB5 and/or pam_krb5. I assume it is roughly the same issue. I'm glad to know it is fixed in RH6.
