hi! I don't know Knoppix at all. It depends on the kernel if you have to recompile it. It all depends whether the kernel was compiled with it's own loop device. Further it must be able to load modules - meaning CONFIG_MODULES=y and CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP=n. I would assume, since the old version worked, that you don't have to do that. Just make sure that the installed sources correspond to the kernel you're actually running. In the loop-AES.README it says: ======= (Re)configuring and (re)compiling your kernel are required for following reasons: (1) to disable loop driver in your kernel, (2) to get your kernel sources to match your running kernel, (3) to get your kernel .config to match your running kernel, (4) to set up configure time generated links properly, (5) to generate compile time created header files properly to match your kernel configuration. Failure to fulfill *all* above requirements may cause loop.o driver compilation to fail or generate incorrectly operating code. ======== Cheers, Ben On Wednesday 01 June 2005 15:16, Phil H wrote: > Oops sorry - I realised 2 seconds after posting that > the ramdisk loop.o is a SYMLINK (of course) to the one > on KNOPPIX. > > I suppose this means I have to remaster the livecd to > upgrade (but presumably do not have to recompile the > kernel?). > > --- Phil H <philtickle200@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: > > I see from the loop-aes README that to upgrade to a > > newer version you first remove the old loop.o with > > rmmod. > > > > I'm running a Knoppix-based livecd distro all from > > RAM, so the existing out-of-date (loop-aes v1.6i-1) > > loop.o module is in two places: > > /KNOPPIX/lib/modules/2.4.26/kernel/drivers/block/loop.o > > > and > > /ramdisk/lib/modules/2.4.26/kernel/drivers/block/loop.o > > > Presumably I can remove the live one in ramspace and > > compile & install an updated loop.o on the ramdisk, > > which will then work until it is lost when I reboot? > > > > But rmmod loop.o says the "module is not loaded". > > (?) > > > > > > > > __________________________________ > > Do you Yahoo!? > > Yahoo!
