You could check whether ACPI cpufreq functions are exposed by following these instructions: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/trenn/How_to_check_for_ACPI_BIOS_syntax_bugs.txt and then do: grep _PSS *.dsl If this doesn't show anything, the CPU is not recognized by the BIOS and BIOS does not export necessary functions to the OS. dmesg/syslog after trying to load acpi-cpufreq should also point to a firmware upgrade now IIRC.
