For testing purposes, perhaps you could establish a VPN connection between the two hosts (e.g. with openvpn or openswan) and configure a private subnet over the VPN link. That way all multicast traffic would be tunneled over the VPN link. Beware that if the two hosts are not in close proximity and do not have a reliable, low-latency network connection, the cluster could perform poorly and/or behave erratically. In my experience, such clusters are only as reliable as the network connecting them. (That's to say we learned a lot about networks before we got ours to perform reliably well.)
