Are you absolutely sure about this? I think you are missing something somewhere. I have been using for years the method of adding physical disks and now rbd devices to linux without partitioning them. I mostly do this with disks that contain data that is expected to grow, this way it is easier to resize them while vm's stay active/up. (Coming from the days that the new partition table was not updated and you had to reboot).
