Hi Felix,

I think this issue was introduced by [1] in 5.3 and fixed by [2] in
5.4.   Looks like Jeff didn't realise he was fixing a regression and
didn't flag the fix for backporting.

There is nothing we can do about 5.3 now, so upgrading to 5.4 or 5.5
is probably the only option.
