Main reason to use Ceph object store compared to filesystem?

Dear all =)

If the premise is that there is not a filesystem on top of a Ceph
cluster, what is the killer argument from a developers point to store
you data as objects through a REST API compared to a classic
filesystem?

Is it any different than one of the many NoSQL / key/value databases?
