ext4 external journal - anyone tried this?

It looks like you can get a pretty good performance benefit from using ext4 with
an "external" SSD journal. Has anyone tried this with ceph? Take, for example, a
system with a 3:1 HDD to SSD ratio. What are some of your thoughts?

3 ceph journal partitions + 3 ext4 journal partitions per SSD for the same set
of HDDs? Or maybe stagger it so hdd1,hdd2,hdd3 ceph journals are on ssd1, and
ext4 journals are on ssd2?

Or perhaps drop ceph SSD journal and let it set on a partition at the start of
the HDD, with only ext4 SSD journals?
