Jon, whenever reporting bugs (which in this case are totally unrelated to CEPH) all relevant version information is helpful. In your case distro (I suspect debian testing or backports), kernel, etc. I have ganeti 2.9 and 2.10 running with backports and testing and RBD in kernelspace w/o problems. While a qemu version with userspace RBD support is in unstable, it hasn't made it to testing or backports yet (last I checked was Friday).
