We have this issue too. Our case it caused by a faulty ethernet card. If a user
logs on with a large profile 2-8GB it will lock the card up, then samba will not
start (no messages, just the [OK] and it is gone). When we powercycle the box,
all is well. We have tried to rmmod/insmod the nic drivers with intermittent
results. We have the new boxes to migrate, now just looking for the time to do
it. PS read the remainder of the thread before replying.
