It also seems perfectly happy with just "smbd -D" to start it, after system
startup. 

But the two lines above do not work when from /etc/rc.local. Haven't tried
the simpler invocation there yet....

The init.d file still fails. So the problem is to debug why it fails - which
is probably the same reason why /etc/rc.local won't do it - which eludes me.
