Perhaps we're onto something here.  I don't get what you get with that command.

[frankcox@jeff ~]$ pkg-config --cflags gtk+-2.0
Package cairo was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `cairo.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
Package 'cairo', required by 'Pango Cairo', not found

[frankcox@jeff ~]$ rpm -qa | grep cairo
cairo-1.2.4-5.el5
pycairo-1.2.0-1.1
cairo-devel-1.2.4-5.el5
cairo-1.2.4-5.el5
pycairo-devel-1.2.0-1.1
