I have defined
search localhost in /etc/resolv.conf

cat /etc/resolv.conf
search localhost

i did not define any nameserver ip address in this file

i have given the gw ip from where the internet can be reached

no dns is running in gateway.
no dns service is running on the PC
no bind packages are installed on pc

but still if i ping to some domain like
ping www.google.com it resolves and displayes icmp replies.

i dont know from where this name resolution is taking place

There is the possibility that /etc/nsswitch.conf might give you a clue...
