have you actually installed the module?
(as root: make -C /lib/modules/... modules_install)

You might also need a "depmod -a" after installing it.

Then "modinfo ufs" should reply:
[tru@calamityjane ~/ufs-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5-from-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5]$ modinfo ufs
filename:       /lib/modules/2.6.18-8.1.8.el5/extra/ufs.ko
license:        GPL
srcversion:     28C144D2C43C6B79635A5AA
