The Fedora machine is doing some king of LVM. It is not hardware RAID.
SiL 3114 is indeed fake RAID. Jeff Garzik (the Linux ATA head honcho)
told me there's no way one could enable hardware RAID with that chipset,
- "the capability simply isn't there in the silicon".
I ended up using software RAID with CentOS.
