No, you don't need to recompile the kernel.
As has been said already in this thread, you need to update, and the
centosplus kernel has ntfs support built in if you can't get that
module to work.

Also, running the mount command should prompt the ntfs kernel module
to be installed, assuming that kernel module rpm is any good.
