In other words - convert an i386 to ia64.  I don't care
about the applications, just the kernel.

Actually, it'd be converting i386 to x86_64. Converting from i386 to
ia64 is one HELL of an upgrade. It's technically possible, but it'd be
a world of pain. Far easier to reinstall.
