Why is yum not liked by some?

It looks like under Centos4 I can:
yum install nx-0-1.4.0-4.1.centos4
even though nx-0-1.5.0-0.centos4 is also in the repository and
would be the default for 'yum install nx'.

But under Centos3.5 I can't do the equivalent
yum install gaim-1-1.3.1-0.el3 or even specify the
latest gaim-1-1.3.1-0.el3.3

Is that a new feature or am I doing something wrong?
